"City Rat, Country Rat" Games League - Chicago Edition

How Does League Play Work?

League play is spread out over three "months" with 1 Country Game and 2-3 City Games offered each month. Teams that play all games of a type are eligible to win medals for the best overall City & Country Ratters. See prior medal winners below!

There are two ways to participate to maximize flexibility (you can also mix & match them):

  1. Come play in a bigger group on the designated Friday nights...
    OR
  2. Complete league run(s) when you come for scheduled training that month.*

*Note: With this option, you either come a bit early or stay a bit late after your class or private lesson - league runs don't cut into training time.

Friday Night Schedule:

  • Check In Starts: 6:30 PM
  • Blinds Start: 7 PM
  • Expect to run until 9-9:30 depending on entries

2026 Chicago Fall League Now Open for Entries!

Teams may play either City OR Country games OR both. Extra Madd Ratter trials offered on group Friday night times only (great for Crazy 8s practice)! City runs are reported to Happy Ratters HQ and count for Qs/points towards Happy Ratters games titles.

League Schedule: Fall 2026

Game Descriptions (updated for 2026)

Country Rat Style

Played on straw bale courses; one fault (false alert) allowed in all Country games. Fault deducts one point from score.

Ups & Downs

Half of the available tubes hidden on ground; other half elevated.

Scoring:

  • Up Rats = 4 points each
  • Down Rats = 2 points each
  • Tunnel = 1 point

For BH Senior/Master Teams:

  • 4 rats, 2 litter, 3.5 minutes (3:30)

For BH Novice/Open Teams:

  • 2 rats, 2 litter, 2.5 minutes (2:30)

Flip A Coin

Course divided into 2 halves; coin flipped for each run to determine which side handler must stay on; other side is a distance challenge.

Scoring:

  • Far Rats = 4 points each
  • Near Rats = 2 points each
  • Tunnel = 1 point

For BH Senior/Master Teams:

  • 4 rats, 2 litter, 3.5 minutes (3:30)

For BH Novice/Open Teams:

  • 2 rats, 1 litter, 2.5 minutes (2:30)

Burrow Bonanza

Up to 8 tunnel opportunities of various types; only tunnels earn points, the more turns a tunnel has the more points it is worth!

All Levels:

  • 1 rat, no litter, 2 minutes (2:00) to complete as many unique tunnels as possible
  • Can find and remove rat tube but it's not worth anything!

Madd Ratter (extra game offered group Friday nights only, not tallied for m

8 rats, 4 litter, 2 minutes (2:00); played with CZ8 rules

Offered group weekend times only - not counted in league tallies, but offered as an option for Crazy 8s practice! Note: Results WILL count as Madd Ratter Qs towards the future potential Country Rat games organization...

City Rat Style

Played on "urban" courses following all official Happy Ratters rules for each game. All City Rat game results are reported as official Happy Ratters runs for all dogs registered with the national organization.

Road Rage Rats

Levels 1-4 offered (NEW GAME!): course of many wheeled items; each has a tube (rats increase with levels)

Village Rats

Levels 1-3 offered (NEW GAME!): search for rats in fabric pop-up playhouses and tents (rats increase with levels)

A-MAZE-ing Rat

Levels 1-4 offered: Xpens provide ~3 ft wide corridor to hunt through a maze (always 1 rat, maze expands with levels)

Dump Hunter

Levels 1-3 offered: handler stays behind start line a distance away from "dumped" objects (always 1 rat, distance increases with levels)

Ultimate Distance

Levels 1-3 offered: handler stays seated behind start line (always 1 rat, distance increases with levels)

Silent Hunt

Levels 1-3 offered: once handler cues dog to hunt they must remain perfectly still and silent; judge calls find (rats increase with levels)

Rat Trap

Levels 1-5 offered - course has tubes hidden in bags; only empty & rat tubes (rats increase with levels)

With Country Rat games, City Sniffers is piloting this league format as part of explorations about forming a new games-focused organization. If this endeavor does gain traction, any qualifying runs and points earned during our pilot games leagues will be recorded with the NEW entity at no additional/future cost. Thus during this pilot period, Country Rat runs are slightly discounted due to the lack of a recording fee.

Congrats prior league medalists!
